Background

Intelligent Traffic Management systems leverage advanced technologies to optimize and control urban and highway traffic flows. These solutions integrate high-speed fiber-optic networks, wireless backup connectivity such as 5G, industrial-grade routers, sensors, surveillance cameras, and centralized software platforms for monitoring and management. The combination of these technologies enables the real-time collection, transmission, and analysis of traffic data, resulting in improved safety, smoother traffic movement, and more efficient use of infrastructure.

System Requirements

  • High-speed and reliable connectivity between all traffic infrastructure components (traffic lights, information displays, cameras, weather stations).
  • Wireless backup connectivity (e.g., 5G) to ensure continuous operation in case of primary fiber link failure.
  • Centralized management and monitoring of all networked devices.
  • Secure communication and data protection (encryption, VPN support).
  • Scalability to accommodate future expansion with additional devices and applications.

System Description

The selected solution is based on the industrial-grade ICR-4461 router from the advanced v4 platform, forming the backbone of the communication infrastructure. This hardware provides:

  • Fiber-optic connectivity via a dedicated Fiber SFP port, serving as the primary channel for high-throughput and reliable data transmission.
  • 5G module for backup connectivity, ensuring maximum network availability and seamless failover in case of primary link disruption.
  • Centralized management via the WebAccess/DMP platform, enabling remote configuration, real-time monitoring, and control of all devices across the infrastructure.
  • VPN support with IPsec encryption, ensuring secure data transmission between field devices and the central control center.
  • Scalability, enabled by a wide range of hardware and software features. The router offers four PoE-capable Gigabit Ethernet ports for direct connection of IP cameras or other powered devices, as well as serial interfaces (RS232/RS485) for integration of legacy or industrial equipment. On the software side, support for custom Router Apps allows flexible deployment of new services and functionalities.

Project Implementation

The deployment of the Intelligent Traffic Management system was carried out by the customer’s chosen system integrator. Advantech supplied the key communication components and management platform that formed the backbone of the solution:

  • Industrial-grade ICR-4461 routers installed at critical sites (traffic intersections, information displays, surveillance cameras, weather stations).
  • Fiber-optic and 5G backup connectivity supported by the routers to ensure high availability and seamless failover.
  • Centralized device management through the WebAccess/DMP platform, allowing secure remote configuration, real-time monitoring and control.
  • Security features including VPN tunnels and IPsec encryption to protect data integrity between field devices and the control center.

System integration, installation of additional equipment, and operator training were handled by the customer’s integrator. This division of roles ensured a smooth deployment with minimal disruption to ongoing traffic operations.
